What Is a Gyrojet?

The Gyrojet is a family of unique firearms developed in the 1960s named for the method of gyroscopically stabilizing its projectiles.

Rather than inert bullets, Gyrojets fire small rockets called Microjets which have little recoil and do not require a heavy barrel or chamber to resist the pressure of the combustion gases.

Velocity on leaving the tube was very low, but increased to around 1,250 feet per second (380 m/s) at 30 feet (9.1 m). The result is a very lightweight weapon.

Purpose of This Page

This page is intended to act as a clearing-house of useful information about the Gyrojet. The goal is to facilitate a 3D-printable Gyrojet weapon — including the Microjets.

Such a design would be accomplished via an Open-Source Hardware project. It would be developed by anonymous engineers and hobbyists, then distributed via Bittorrent under the GNU General Public License. Being Open-Source would allow anyone — worldwide — to modify and/or improve designs.

This would circumvent the ongoing destruction of the 2nd Amendment to the US Constitution. It would also allow worldwide distribution, putting an affordable, effective weapon into the hands of those who need it most.

It’s always useful to think outside the box.

These are links to videos using something other than lead as the primary substance in the bullet. Imagine a 3D-printed Microjet tipped with sodium and/or potassium.

It might even work as a propellant, using water and sodium and/or potassium as the reactants.

Penetration would be minimal, but as defense against an un-armored individual, it would have obvious implications. It would also be a good round for home defense, as such a bullet wouldn’t penetrate walls.

This site is largely for selling the book An Introduction to MBA Gyrojets and Other Ordnance by Mel Carpenter. However, there are a number of sample chapters and supplemental chapters written after the book was published.

For any true Gyrojet aficionado, it’s well worth the money. It includes detailed drawings, patents, tear-downs of various weapons, and diagrams of test microjets.

The Deathwind Project

An excellent site for those wishing to experiment with Microjets.

“DeathWind” is a prototype next generation self-contained rocket projectile, designed for Military (primarily Naval) weapons usage. It is a blend of the MBAssociates 13mm Gyrojet and the Russian Shkval torpedo, combined with some “Coanda Effect” physics.
